Choosing the Proper Dilution Ratio & Application for Roof-Be-Clean®

Roof-Be-Clean® is formulated to clean your roof no matter how stained it might be, however you need to properly dilute RBC concentrate for your specific needs.  This is easily determined by examining your roof. A heavily stained roof is when the stains on your roof have been there for a number of months and/or looks dark.  In this situation you simply mix RBC 4:1 (4 parts warm water:1 part RBC).  This ratio can also be used to treat existing Mold, Mildew, Moss and Lichen growth. Heavy emphasis is on stain/growth removal.  RBC mixed at 4:1 will treat approximately 1,500 Sqft up to 2000 Sqft A lightly stained roof is when you first see signs of stains appearing on your roof.  In this situation you simply mix RBC 6:1 (6 parts warm water: 1 part RBC). This ratio will remove unwanted staining and also help prevent more staining from re-occurring.  RBC mixed at 6:1 will treat approximately 2,250 Sqft up to 3000 Sqft. For best results, you should choose the correct Dilution Rate that best meets the current stain status of your roof- highly stained or with existing moss/lichen mix 4:1, lightly stained mix 6:1.  We recommend repeat applications every 30-45 days until the desired results are reached. Results will vary depending on how much rainfall you receive which washes the stains off.  Typical times are 3 to 9 months. Below are General Procedures that apply to stain removal situations. Following the general procedures, recommended procedures for Specific Situations are addressed in regards to dilution ratios, etc.

Recommended Type of Sprayer for Roof Application

Roof-Be-Clean® is formulated for application with an ordinary, garden pump-sprayer.  Since application is normally done from a ladder at the roof eave, a backpack type sprayer is recommended.  This type of sprayer provides several advantages over the handheld type.  Most important, it is safer since it frees a hand to hold the ladder.  Pumping is easier since a pumping lever is located at the side (some units allow switching the lever based on right or left hand use) so tank pressurization is accomplished by using only one hand – again a safety consideration.  Also, backpack sprayers normally provide higher operating pressures making it easier to spray to the top of the roof from the eave.  These sprayers are normally available at home and garden supply stores as well as hardware stores. An extension wand is also a handy accessory when applying Roof-Be-Clean® as it allows easier application of product to the higher parts of the roof. Also, with an extension wand, more roof area can be sprayed from each ladder location minimizing the number of times the ladder must be moved thereby reducing the overall job time. Hose-end sprayers that we are familiar with will not work.

General Procedures

  • Please read over the Frequently Asked Questions under the “FAQs” Menu Tab for some good basic information.
  • Store Roof-Be-Clean® at around 72 degrees F.
  • If delivered in cold weather, keep Roof-Be-Clean® at room temperature for 48-hours before use.
  • Shake container of Roof-Be-Clean® vigorously before using.
  • Do not spray when it is windy so as to avoid overspraying.
  • Avoid overspraying on siding, furniture, vehicles, etc.
  • Apply when roof is dry. The dryer the better. When it is dry, the stains will soak up Roof-Be-Clean® like a sponge.
    • Avoid application during heat of the day when the roof is very hot – early morning or late afternoon is best.  This allows good absorption of Roof-Be-Clean® while minimizing rapid evaporation.
    • Do NOT! Do NOT! wet roof prior to application.
  • Do NOT rinse roof after application. For best results, do not apply product if rain is expected within 24 hours.
  • Do not apply when the temperature is below freezing or when it was been below freezing for 2-3 days prior to application. The stains might contain ice crystals which would prevent good absorption of Roof-Be-Clean®.
    • Wet surrounding plants using garden hose before application of product to roof.
    • Apply using a standard garden pump sprayer.
    • For each gallon of diluted mixture, add 1-tablespoon of household liquid dishwashing detergent.
    • Stir well but don’t shake (avoid creating foam).
    • Spray roof from bottom to top.
    • Do not spray bottom 2-3 rows of shingles -rain will spread product down to this area.
    • After application, using a garden hose: o first remove all debris (leaves, etc.) from gutters then rinse out gutters thoroughly o rinse off surrounding plants and shrubs o rinse off surrounding lawn furniture, vehicles, etc. subject to overspray o rinse off siding subject to overspray.

Procedures for Highly Stained Roofs

  • Read and follow the General Procedures above.
  • Use a 4:1 dilution ratio (4-parts warm water to 1-part Roof-Be-Clean®) for initial application.
  • Apply spray heavier on stained areas as well as top 4-5 rows of shingles.
  • Repeat application at 30-day intervals using 4:1 dilution ratio until the desired results are obtained.
  • Coverage will be approximately 300 square feet per diluted gallon (the more stained the roof, the less the coverage since the stains absorb like a sponge).  Since a 4:1 dilution ratio yields 5-gallons, coverage will be approx. 1500 square feet.
  • Stains will disappear over a period of 3 to 9 months.

Procedures for Lightly Stained Roofs

  • Read and follow the General Procedures above.
  • Use a 6:1 dilution ratio (6-parts warm water to 1-part Roof-Be-Clean®) for initial application.
  • Apply spray heavier on stained areas as well as top 4-5 rows of shingles.
  • Repeat application at 30-day intervals using 6:1 dilution ratio until the desired results are obtained.
  • Coverage will be approximately 320 square feet per diluted gallon (the more stained the roof, the less the coverage since the stains absorb like a sponge).  Since a 6:1 dilution ratio yields 7-gallons, coverage will be about 2,250 square feet.
  • Stains will disappear over a period of 3 to 9 months.
